Outreach
High-School Visiting

Education

We conducted workshop and made a presentation at Sapporo Kita High School in Hokkaido, to the students majoring in science.

Our Goal

Through our lecture, we tried to achieve these three main topics for high school students.

  • Tell what iGEM is and what our activity is
  • Encourage high school students to be interested in iGEM
  • Give correct information of genetic technology
  • Obtain their opinions about gene recombination

We showed them some examples of practical applications and took time to think about gene recombination and its future.

Survey

Here, we show some opinions we got in this workshop. The title is "How do you think about gene recombination"

STUDENT 1

Against gene recombination, I have had little knowledge about it ever. However, taking this lecture, I found well that it has a possibility to give our daily life really big benefits.

I hope that we make the risk of gene recombination smaller little by little and such technology will be used more widely. By spreading correct knowledge of gene recombination to people more widely, it may be used more commonly.

‏STUDENT 2

Taking this lecture, I got two findings. One is that we can put our hope in new technology like gene recombination for foods and our life in the future. The other is that we humans have big responsibility to use such technology because we don't know its change or effect when we change original character of living things artificially. It’s important to make use of correct knowledge on gene recombination we got today and to share it as many people as possible.

‏STUDENT 3

I agree with using technology of gene recombination itself. However, I also know it has ethical problem and I have only a vague idea of it. Because of this, I can’t decide my opinion about it yet.

In the future, they are our future tasks; we have to show clearly how genetically modified organisms effect environment and human health, and have to make it more safe and evidential.
