Georgia Tech
The Georgia Institute of Technology, located in the heart of Atlanta, is one of the top research universities in the United States. Not only is Gerogia Tech one of the top science and technology schools in the world, but is currently ranked as the number seven public university in the United States, according to the U.S. News & World Report. Georgia Tech was founded as the Georgia School of Technology in 1885 as a trade school, and in 1948, it changed its name to the Georgia Institute of Technology to reflect its transformation from a trade school to a university. Today, the institute has six different colleges and offers degrees in 34 different undergraduate majors. The engineering college is ranked fifth in the nation overall by the U.S. News and World Report, with the biomedical engineering program ranking fourth in the nation.
Georgia Tech’s name has also made quite a splash in the athletic world, especially in 1996 when the Georgia Tech campus was the venue of many of the athletic events in the summer Olympics, with Olympic athletes living in dormitories. The pool events at the Olympics were held in Georgia Tech’s very own aquatic center in the renowned campus recreation center. Georgia Tech boasts one of the best on-campus recreation center’s in the nation, and many celebrities can be seen attending this very gym. Recently, Georgia Tech’s campus was the shooting site for the movie The Internship, and this year another movie is being filmed near campus. The university’s two beloved mascots are Buzz, the Yellow Jacket and the Ramblin’ Wreck. Additionally, the school is a NCAA Division I school having won the football national championship title four times since its founding.
