3K against cancer

This year we considered that we needed to increase the awareness people had of our project. Also, we wanted to sensibilize them about the huge problems that cancer involves, so we decided to organize a 3K race to accomplish these objectives.In Monterrey, our city, there is a foundation called “Alianza anti Cáncer” (Anti-cancer Alliance), which is a nonprofit association that helps children with cancer and their families by providing support to meet their basic needs in medical, psychological , nutritional and social care. We noted that great part of the money that they use to subsidize their programs is through an exchange of recycled products with large companies.

iGem Tec Monterrey and Anti-cancer Alliance made an agreement, so the team would be able to help them with their founding. This was achieved by asking the participants to take 6 batteries, 10 bottles of PET, 10 cans of aluminum, 15 caps PET, instead of charging a fee for the race.

The race took place on Tec’s Stadium at 8 a.m. where we counted with the assistance of 60 runners. Before the race started, we had a short talk with the participants about iGem and the project we were doing in a way it would be accessible for everyone.After the race we collected around 100 kg of recycled material. We show some of the pictures made in the event.
