International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition The International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) is the premiere competition in Synthetic Biology. Working at their own schools over the summer, student teams build biological systems of their own design using standard, interchangeable parts. This combination of project design and competition format is an exceptionally motivating and effective teaching method. iGEM gives its participants the opportunity to learn not only science and engineering but entrepreneurship, leadership, safety & security, ethics, and more, all in a cutting-edge and motivational environment.

PROGRAMS Collegiate Division University students from different disciplines and backgrounds cooperate to find solutions to today’s biggest challenges. Labs Program Non profit and academic laboratories can be part of the iGEM community too! Labs have access to distribution kits, part requests, wiki space and more! High School Division Students interested in synthetic biology can participate in iGEM at a high school level. Registry With over 20,000 parts, the iGEM Registry is a growing collection of genetic parts that can be mixed and matched to build synthetic biology devices and systems.
