Our project EcoCADMUS (E. Coli CAdmium DecontaMination Universal System)
targets industrial and mineral processing wastewater contamination by heavy metals and sulfates.
EcoCADMUS provides a safe and selective way to remove
Cadmium Sulfide from waste water using Synthetic Biology.
The Solution
Our project is a biological approach to solving an environmental problem; the removal of cadmium and sulfate from wastewater. Our aim is to increase cadmium and sulfate uptake in our chassis, ''E.coli''. Our system involves chelating cadmium intra-cellularly through over-expressing cysteine-rich phytochelatins. Find out more about our project here.
Our Achievements
We've achieved loads. Apparently. Have a look anyway. Well when the page is finished. Hope I don't forget to update this before the wiki freeze...
Outreach
As part of our project, we wanted to introduce the public to the concept of Genetically Modified Organisms and how they have a multitude of uses. Our outreach took us to many people and places as we explored the relationship between the public and Synthetic Biology

Our Team
Come and meet our lovely team! We've been working hard (mostly!) on our project all over Summer.
Plasmid Construct
Look at the plasmid we're using in our project, complete with a repertoire of Cadmium related genes.
Social Outreach
We've been busy communicating Synthetic Biology and contemplating the sustainability and ethics of our project.
