Penn iGEM Wiki 2014

Biomeme

In our goal to raise synthetic biology awareness to the community, our team partnered with a local Philadelphia biotechnology startup called Biomeme. Biomeme is a young company specializing in mobile DNA diagnostics. Specializing in mobile devices, Biomeme is prototyping a real-time PCR thermocycler that can be connected to the iPhone for rapid DNA analysis. Throughout the summer we used Biomeme's product on various occasions to test the accuracy and quality of the product.

We believe mobile DNA diagnostics offer a whole new arena for iGEM community. Most iGEM teams cannot afford a traditional real-time PCR thermocycler or have access to one, thus hindered from various important research techniques including gene expression analysis. With Biomeme, a low-cost desktop qPCR thermocycler, teams are well-equipped to tackle various problems.

Potential Applications

  • monitor target gene expression
  • effect of triggers on gene expression
  • fast field diagnostics of pathogen
