A simple method for DNA isolation
A lot of people don’t know that our food contains genetic material. Therefor we performed a DNA isolation from bananas with housekeeping articles to educate interested passerby.
Material: |
|
Bananas | Tap water |
Table salt | Dishwashing liquid as detergent |
Washing agent with proteases | Hot water (60 °C) |
Ice | Teaspoon |
Tablespoon | Fork |
Isopropyl (alcohol) (cooled) | Coffee filter |
Funnel | 50 mL vessels |
Test execution:
- preparation of extraction solution:
- 1 teaspoon table salt
- 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid
- 10 drops washing agent
- Fill up to 100 mL with tap water
- Mixing by shaking
- Homogenization of a banana with the fork
- Transfer of 3 teaspoons homogenized banana into a 50mL reaction vessel with 30 mL extraction solution.
- 15 min incubation at 60 °C
- 5 min chilling on ice
- Filter the mixture into a new 50 mL vessel.
- Overlay the filtered solution with some iosporyl (alcohol)
- Wait for 10 min
- DNA is soaring into the phase of isopropyl (alcohol)
