<p>Detection of allergens and toxins in food and water is a very important issue, which is difficult to solve, mainly because the detection must be done at very low concentrations. Our team is paving the path to a cheap and accessible solution to this issue by planning a bio-sensor system that can accurately identify a substance of interest at extremely low concentrations.</p>
+

<p>We are programming E.Coli bacteria to sense the presence of a specific substance and process the signal to produce a green light as well as signal to neighboring bacteria to follow suit, causing a chain reaction. This makes the green light visible to the naked eye, alerting the consumer of the presence of the substance.</p>

<p>Along the way, we plan to build (and make available to future iGEM teams), many useful sub-systems which will include: a Histidine Kinase two component signaling system (which will detect new materials), 6 different double-repression toggle switches (along with the proper characterization), a chemically synthesized photo-switching molecule (activated by the green light produced by the bacteria themselves) which can connect cells, creating a synthetic biofilm, and a method of constructing genetic sequences with Gibson addresses which will make the high-throughput construction of complex biobricks possible.</p>

Safie by Technion-Israel

The Project

We are developing a low concentration bio-detector.

The system is based on an intricate gate construct, utilizes quorum-sensing and an altered two-component signalling system. In addition, groundbreaking organic synthesis of a photo-switching molecule – Azobenzene – is used in a pioneering attempt to mimic biofilm formation.
We have planned and built a low concentration detector using these elements.

Human Practice

In our Human Practices project we focus on 3 principles:

Encouraging independent thinking and creativity among teens and youth
Progressing Arab-Jewish relations through the medium of science
Representing Israel as ambassadors in the worldwide competition of iGEM

SynBio in 3 languages

All of our human practice activities are related to our main concept of SynBio in 3 languages. Each activity was designed to include all members of Israeli society, and was held in Hebrew, Arabic and English.

iGEM high-schools

We have launched the first iGEM high-school team in Israel! We designed detaild lesson plans, raised the money for the team and found facilities. The first group will start working this winter.

SynBio Lectures

We have build lectures for young and older kids on Synthetic biology in space and in water, for our activities and for your free use.

Collaborations

In the iGEM spirit we collaborated with the Paris_Bettencourt team and BGU_Israel in a few projects.
