Our achievements

Team:Goettingen
iGEM Year:2014
Track:Health & Medicine
Project Name:A small change for man, a giant pain for germkind.
Project Abstract:Our aim is to develop a diagnostic technique capable of detecting the presence of fungal pathogens in a sample collected from a patient. Briefly, our approach is as follows. Through a yeast two-hybrid assay we will select a set of peptides that show affinity towards surface proteins from different fungi (Aspergillus nidulans, A. fumigatus, Candida albicans and C. glabrata). After confirming the interaction between the surface proteins and a given peptide, we intend to attach a molecule to the peptide marker. In our project, this molecule will be a fluorescent protein, but in principle can also be an immune system activator which is then recognized by the immune cells or other chemical moiety that adds novel functionalities or increases the peptide stability.

Medal Criteria

We have achieved the following 5 goals:

☞ Register for iGEM, have a great summer, and attend the Giant Jamboree.
☞ Successfully complete and submit this iGEM 2014 Judging form.
HERE you can find our Jugding Form.
☞ Create a team wiki sharing background information, context, inspirations and goals for the project, and documentation of our process and outcomes.
☞ Plan to present a Poster and Talk at the Giant Jamboree.
☞ The description of each project must clearly attribute work done by the students and distinguish it from work done by others, including host labs, advisors, instructors, sponsors, professional website designers, artists, and commercial services.
☞ Document new standard BioBricks Part or Device used in our project/central to our project and submit this part to the iGEM Registry.
☞ Demonstrate the use of art and design for thoughtful, critical investigation of the current and future implications of synthetic biology.
☞ Demonstrate the active engagement of engineers, scientists, members of the public, and other stakeholders as part of our project, during the initiation, development, presentation, and documentation our project.

We have also achieved these 3 goals:

☞ Create a short film about or as part of our project. This video has been sent to the committee and iGEM HQ.
☞ Design and execute a workshop or event for a group of people outside of our team.
☞ Produce an installation or experiment (does not need to be biological) and document it or recreate it at iGEM.

In addition to these achievements we have also done the following tasks:

☞ Provoke others to think about synthetic biology and its implications in a new and novel way.
☞ Collaborate directly with an iGEM team in another track.
☞ Design and document on the Registry of Standard Biological Parts at least one new standard BioBrick Part (teams working with biological materials must adhere to all laboratory safety requirements maintained by iGEM).
☞iGEM projects involve important questions beyond the bench, for example relating to (but not limited to) ethics, sustainability, social justice, safety, security, or intellectual property rights. Describe an approach that our team used to address at least one of these questions. Evaluate our approach, including whether it allowed us to answer our question(s), how it influenced the team's scientific project, and how it might be adapted for others to use (within and beyond iGEM).
