Our project aims for the biological implementation of cellular automata, so we had to find a way to create a regular grid of cells with a defined neighborhood as shown in the pictures below. On the left side a classical cellular automata is depicted, on the right side an outline of our biological version consisting of a grid-like PDMS chip filled with cell colonies encapsulated in alginate beads.
