E. Cowli - Fighting climate change from the beginning
Presumably, very few people would be willing to live without dairy products and beef; there are, however, considerable side effects going along with their consumption. Dairy cows and cattle are important factors in global warming. The microbiota inside the cows rumen releases dangerous amounts of greenhouse gases as they help digest the animal's food. Therefore, finding ways to decrease the production of greenhouse gases is essential.
In this years iGEM project we fight global warming using synthetic biology with two different approaches: (a) elimination of methane emission right inside the cows rumen and (b) reduction of methane emission using biofilters.
