This project is centered around bioremediation of copper in water streams and soil using genetically modified strains of E. coli and S. oneidensis. E. coli and S. oneidensis naturally uptake copper (II) ions, reduce copper (II) to copper (I) by using it as a final electron acceptor, and export copper (I) ions. Both E. coli and S. oneidensis contain different genes for copper uptake, reduction, and export. E. coli and S. oneidensis continue to use all of these above genes and are genetically modified to contain additional copper uptake and reductase genes.
